While some of us prefer dogs or cats, others might think that reptiles are perfect pets. Bearded dragons might be one of the choices of someone who loves reptiles. They are also the most common breed of reptiles and at the same time the all-around best one to keep as a companion.
Origin and caring
They are stunning! But before purchasing one, you should know a little about their history. Bearded dragons come from Australia, but the majority of them are kept as pets in the United States and today they are bred from captive stock. These loyal and friendly lizards make excellent first pets for many families wanting reptiles.
If you’re thinking about getting a born dragon there are some facts to know about them. They require a lot of care, although they are not really affectionate with their owners. They are not suitable for kids or people that want cuddly pets.
Bearded for a reason
They are known for their name, but where does it come from? Their name comes from the pouch-like skin folds under their necks that are covered in tiny spike-like projections, creating the illusion of a beard. They puff out their beards and open their mouths to make themselves appear more dominant when they feel threatened.
The males normally have a darker beard than the females but the beards of both genders turn jet black when they are stressed, making it clear that they’re upset. Isn’t this an extraordinary thing about them?
The relationship with their owners
They are quite friendly animals. They enjoy being held and getting out of their cage to spend time with their human. If the pet is well trained, he or she can answer when being called. Their flat bodies allow them to be held in human hands, but they are not really cuddly.
They would much rather just sit somewhere else outside the cage or with you instead of being cuddled. If you decide to buy a bearded dragon for your kids, you should supervise their interaction as much as possible. A disadvantage would be that you have to wash your hands thoroughly after holding your bearded dragon because it is a carrier of Salmonella.
Cages, light, and nutrition
They need to get light daily since they are cold blooded animals. In order for this to happen, you should assure them UV light during the day. Also, this helps them with their metabolism, from proper bone formation to muscle contraction.
The temperature in their tanks needs to range from 90° on one end, where they can bask in the UV light, to 70°on the other end, where they can cool off if they choose. Using UVB lighting for bearded dragons is essential.
Bearded dragons are amazing creatures with a very complex lifestyle. They need to be well taken care of and we hope this article gave you a very basic type of information for raising one.
