Dogs are our little friends. They may be friendlier than human beings and they may even love you more than your family does. This is because they are sensible creatures. Has there been a situation in which you got a cold and your pet stayed beside you? This is love. And this is why you should take care of the little one, too, especially when your beloved animal has health problems.
We all know that a lot of dogs have a sensitive stomach, but do we all know how to treat such dogs? If the dog suffers, you suffer, too, for various reasons. So, let’s have a look at some ways to solve the problem.
Choose the best ingredients
There are products which may help your dog get better. Some of them are Apple Cider Vinegar, pumpkin, sweet potatoes or green beans. Apple Cider Vinegar has so many uses, that it seems to be a perfect remedy. First of all, it cleans the urine, improves the problems caused by skin allergies and it may even act as an antibiotic.
Thus, ACV keeps your pet away from getting poisoned from food, it improves the digestion and restores the pH balance. The latter is very important, since the frequency of diarrhea or constipation problems depend on this pH. It is said that a 50-pound dog needs one teaspoon of ACV twice a day, but, naturally, you can ask your vet first.
Food that is a source of fiber is perfect for your dog, since it keeps your pet’s stomach full for a longer time and there will no longer be morning vomiting. This could mark the end of your dog’s morning problems. Prepare a tablespoon of pumpkin for your friend before sleep and the morning will be pleasant for the both of you.
However, do not overuse this product. Pumpkin may cause diarrhea if used in excess. Other products which are good in this case are sweet potatoes or green beans.
Change the food
You can change the food your dog eats. But do not abruptly change the ingredients. It is recommended to start giving your pet 80% of the old food and 20% of the new diet. Then, slowly increase the percentage over the next days. It may take between 5 and 7 days.
Try to find out which ingredient upsets the stomach of your dog and exclude it from the new diet. Instead, include ingredients which are easily digested. However, if you cannot find the culprit, exclude grains and additives. It would be better to give up on dog food since it contains a lot of additives which may ruin your puppy’s stomach.
Still, if you do not have time to cook something else, choose dog food for sensitive stomachs: Canidae Life Stages Dry Dog Food, Hill’s Science Diet Sensitive Stomach & Skin Dry Dog Food or Nutro Natural Choice Limited Ingredients Dry Food could be all good choices.
There have been studies which showed that it may be healthy for dogs to get no food for a period of time, especially when they suffer from repeated episodes of vomiting or diarrhea. It would do no harm to your pet to fast for some hours.
If your pet is small, then you should keep the food away for 12 hours, no more. However, check your vet to see if this way goes for your dog, since every pet is unique and not all practices may suit yours.
Add probiotics to your dog’s diet
Our body needs probiotics to function normally. Just like we add probiotics to our diets, dogs can have them, too. Probiotics prevent the growth of bacteria that the body “does not like” and keep the digestive system and the immune system in a good shape.
You can buy a pill or a powder which contains probiotics and you can put them in your dog’s food. However, these additives may not be as effective as natural probiotics, such as green tripe or natural yogurts (avoid those that contain fruits) since they are very good sources of good bacteria.
Do not give medication to your puppy on your own
We would not recommend you to give medication to your puppy, since the drugs may not be safe. But if the problem is really getting bad, then get in touch with your veterinarian and ask what’s good for your pet. Do not ever give any drugs to your dog if you aren’t sure of the effect they might have on his or her body. Always seek a professional’s advice before starting any type of treatment.
Find out if your dog is not dehydrated
If your dog suffers from diarrhea, you should definitely check his or her hydration level, since there is a high risk of liquid loss if your pet is vomiting or has repeated episodes of diarrhea. There are some tests which can be applied to verify the hydration.
First of all, you can check for skin elasticity by lifting the skin on the back using two fingers. The result will be good if the skin returns into the original position, but if it remains lifted, then you should go see the veterinarian for some liquid supplies.
Another way to check the level of hydration is by verifying your pet’s gums. All that you have to do is run your finger over the gums and see if the saliva is slimy. If it is not – if it is dry, then your dog is dehydrated. You have to see the veterinarian!
Check for parasites
If you have tried everything you could and your dog still does not get better, you have to see the veterinarian and check for parasites. This is a more serious problem, which can affect other organs. If your dog is not acting as usual and you suspect that there is more than just an upset stomach, go to the vet immediately!
Do not ignore your puppy’s problems, because the dog always tries to keep you safe! Answer with the same care and show your pet just how much you love him or her.
